Study of Great Bible Truths – Vol. 2 Lesson 19

Lesson 19: Baptism and Filling

(A deep and real experience of the power of salvation is dependent on the knowledge of Biblical doctrines (truths) -and not merely an intellectual or theoretical knowledge).

1. The Holy Spirit is the spiritual manifestation of the Lord Jesus Christ in the heart of believers. It is by the Holy Spirit we are baptized into Christ and in His death. (Romans 6:3, 1 Cor. 12:3, Galatians 3:27, Ephesians 4:5). One Lord, One Faith, One Baptism refers to baptism by the Holy Spirit into Christ.

2. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is an experience in which the Lord Jesus Christ becomes real in a way He has never been before. The Lord Jesus Christ manifests Himself to the believer spiritually, and the result is a great love for Christ is shed abroad in us. This is the birthright of every Christian. Acts 2:39, 1 Peter 1:8

3. On the day of Pentecost the Christian Church was instituted and proclaimed as the body of Christ. The disciples and Apostles in the upper room became the body of Christ when they were baptized into the one body by the Holy Spirit.

4. Filling with the Holy Ghost happens for the sake of service; it gives us power and authority for service. Filling of the Holy Ghost is absolutely necessary for true service. Acts 2:4, 4:31, 13:9, 6:3-5, Ephesians 13:9. The Holy Spirit’s presence is vital to our witness. 1 Cor. 2:4

5. As Christians, we are called upon to be witnesses of the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of God, as the Savior of the world, and our Savior and Savior to all who put their faith and trust in Him. Only the Holy Spirit can enable us to do that. Filling is essential to all Christian Service.

6. The filling of the Spirit is essential to a true act of worship.

7. What is the difference between baptism with the Spirit and filling with the Spirit?
a. Baptism is the initial experience.
b. Filling is an experience that can often be repeated.

8. Even Jesus did not enter into His ministry until the Holy Spirit had descended upon Him. He even told His disciples whom He had trained for 3 years, not to start their ministry, nor attempt to witness of Him, until they had received the power which the Holy Spirit would give them.

9. We should realize the necessity of seeking this filling of the Spirit and of the His power before we attempt any task for the Kingdom of God, whatever it may be!
